A dramatic hilltop town dominates the right side of this wide river landscape. Perched atop a steep, rocky hill, the town is a marvel of fortification architecture: at the summit stands a large castle or palace with multiple towers, including a prominent central polygonal tower with a pointed roof, all surrounded by defensive walls and battlements. Below the main castle, the hillside is dotted with houses -- Dutch-style buildings with stepped gables -- descending toward the river. A tall, separate tower and a windmill stand on the town's left flank. The hill itself rises sharply from the riverbank, its slopes a warm golden-brown in the sunlight.
