Basic Information
Historical Context
This drawing was a friendly gift from Menzel to the Swiss painter and printmaker Karl Stauffer-Bern (1857–1891). The German inscription at the bottom reads: "Herrn H. Paethke / freundschaft von / Stauffer Bern / 85" (To Herr H. Paethke, in friendship from Stauffer Bern, '85) and "Im Atelier / 18 Nov. 11–1 Uhr / von A. Menzel" (In the studio, 18 November, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., by A. Menzel). This indicates that the portrait was executed impromptu in Menzel's Berlin studio in two hours for a friend. Stauffer-Bern was an important Swiss Symbolist painter of the late nineteenth century who had contacts with Menzel.
Artistic Appreciation
This portrait sketch is a superb demonstration of Menzel's gift for capturing the instant. Within a mere two hours the artist achieved not only an accurate likeness but also conveyed the sitter's character and sense of age. Menzel's profound understanding of cranial anatomy allowed him to handle baldness, wrinkles, and sagging skin with ease—he neither idealizes nor exaggerates senescence, but presents the authentic condition of life with an almost scientific objectivity. The pencil lines possess a musical rhythm: the contour is firm and forceful, the dark tones are built up in successive layers, and the highlights are reserved or gently lifted out. This drawing philosophy of "creating freedom within limits" is precisely why Menzel's influence on later draftsmanship pedagogy has been so far-reaching.
Portrait of Herr H. Paethke
Visual Description
The image presents a bust-length portrait in profile of a bald elderly gentleman facing left. His facial contours are distinct, his forehead broad, his eye sockets slightly sunken, the nasolabial folds deeply etched, and his chin adorned with neatly trimmed side-whiskers. He wears a dark coat over a white shirt. Menzel uses delicate pencil lines to render precisely the looseness of the old man's skin, the sparse strands of hair, and the layered texture of the whiskers. The background is a light gray tone, allowing the head to lift slightly from the paper. The overall mood is dignified yet intimate, preserving the formality of portraiture while conveying the familiarity and warmth of friendship.
