Basic Information
Historical Context
Commissioned by Augustinian monks of San Donato a Scopeto in 1481, left unfinished when Leonardo departed for Milan in 1482. Subsequently worked on by other artists. Modern conservation revealed the full extent of Leonardo's underdrawing. Represents radical departure from traditional Adoration compositions.
Artistic Appreciation
Most revealing document of Leonardo's creative method. Underdrawing shows Leonardo working from broad compositional studies to detailed figure studies, constantly revising. Architectural backgrounds demonstrate study of Brunelleschi and Alberti. Psychological drama anticipates The Last Supper.
The Adoration of the Magi (Adorazione dei Magi)
Visual Description
Central group of Virgin and Christ Child enthroned before rocky outcrop with three Magi approaching. Great semicircle of figures -- men, horses, camels, attendants. Two architectural structures in various states of completion in background. Dramatic incompletion with brown umber underdrawing visible, giving powerful sketch-like quality.
