This drawing is a sketchbook page from Menzel's late period (1899, when he was 84 years old), representing his impromptu observations of everyday figures on the streets of Berlin. The sheet is annotated with his monogram "A.M." and the date "99." in the lower-right corner, a typical practice in his personal sketchbooks. The work was later acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., through a gift from Ruth B. Benedict in memory of her parents, Sophie and Carl Boschwitz.
